This is an old Tsutsugaki-indigo-dyed cotton fragment textile.
This one dyed cranes by Tsutsugaki dyeing technique in old-times. In Japan, the crane is a symbol of happiness and is depicted as a very auspicious motif.
“筒がき” (tsutsugaki) refers to a traditional Japanese fabric dyeing technique, where patterns are applied using a tube or funnel to create designs, often seen in textiles like kimonos. It’s a form of freehand resist dyeing.
The faded indigo color is so elegant and some holes were repaired with Sashiko stitching.
