Temari (手毬) are traditional Japanese handcrafted decorative balls made from fabric and thread. Originally used as toys for children, they are now valued as ornamental items or special gifts.
Temari are created by wrapping and stitching fabric or thread to form intricate and beautiful patterns, including geometric shapes or floral designs. The finished temari are colorful and often feature elaborate embroidery, giving them an artistic and vibrant appearance. Artisans carefully handmade each ball, showcasing Japan’s traditional aesthetics and craftsmanship.
These two found pairs of cotton threads were made about 100 years ago in Sho-nai area of Yamagata prefecture.
