This textile was made of 5-length hand-woven hemp and ramie fibers. It has a thick and rough texture. It was perhaps made in northern-west Japan about over 100 years ago.
It was probably used as a rug to place grain, etc. It had damage and holes in many places but was repaired and used by people then using Sashiko stitch embroidery.
Some kanji characters are the family crests of the families that used them.
