This is a very old indigo-dyed cotton cloth. It was dyed by a technique called Shibori tie-dyeing.
Shibori is a traditional Japanese textile dyeing technique that manipulates fabric to create intricate patterns and designs.
The technique involves shaping and securing the fabric in various ways before dyeing it. When the fabric is dyed, the areas that have been manipulated or bound resist the dye, creating areas of color and areas of white or undyed fabric.
This one repaired some holes by hand Sashiko stitching.
