This textile is a very old indigo-dyed Katazome fragment.
Katazome is a traditional Japanese fabric dyeing technique using stencils. A rice paste is applied through stencils to resist dye, creating intricate patterns. The fabric is dyed, then washed to remove the paste, revealing the design. It's commonly used for kimonos and textiles, featuring natural motifs and geometric shapes.
It has been used for various purposes, such as clothing and bedding while being repaired over and over again.
Several small fabrics were stitched together with Sashiko stitching. It has been used and washed for a long time, so it has a soft texture and a beautiful faded color.
